Effect of an additional oral administration of phosphorus and calcium in treatment of parturient paresis cows [German]

An oral drug providing phosphorus and calcium was tested in a filed trial in therapy of parturient paresis of dairy cows. Of 180 cows included in this trial, 110 animals were parturient because of deficiency of either calcium or phosphorus or both. The animals were distributed randomly to one of two treatments. Control therapy consists of 500 ml of 24% calciumboro-gluconat and 30 mg dexamethasone, phosphorus therapy consists of control therapy and additional an oral gel providing 45 g phosphorus and 55 g calcium. Serum samples were taken from the jugular vein before first treatment for analysis of the following parameter: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, ASAT, CK, GLDH, bilirubin and beta-hydroxybutyrate. There were no significant differences between the both treatment groups in case history, age, or body condition. The concentrations of the parameter in serum showed no significant differences with the exception of phosphorus. Cows of the control group had slight but significant lower phosphorus level than cows of the phosphorus group. In both groups therapy success after first treatment and whole therapy success were very high. Differences were not significant. The oral gel had no greater benefit to parturient cows n this trial. Unsuccessful treated animals had had significant higher activities of CK and ASAT before first treatment.
