While much can happen between now and then, it does seem likely that the next federal election campaign will bring greater focus upon environmental issues than has traditionally been the case. Among other factors, the Liberal Party has recently selected a former environment minister as its new leader. The Green Party has also chosen a long-time environmentalist as leader and is jockeying for participation in any televised federal leaders debates. The Conservatives have tabled clean air legislation and are working through regular announcements and communications, to establish an environmental image. The NDP and Bloc Quebecois are traditionally perceived as being defenders of the environment.
