Polish foreign trade in food and agricultural products (January - September 1997)

In the first three quarters of 1997 Poland continued to be the net importer of food and agricultural products. The deficit was high at USD 565m, but it decreased by 30% in comparison with the same period of 1996. In the period under discussion the value of imports reached USD 2.8bn, and was 3% higher than in the like period of 1996. However, the rate of growth of imports was lower compared with the first three quarters of 1996. The value of exports reached USD 2,2bn and increased by 15.5%. The structure of Polish trade in food and agricultural products showed the continuation of trends recorded in previous years. The share of the European Union in the Polish export of food and agricultural products diminished. The value of exports to the EU decreased from USD 885m to USD 874m. Imports from the EU increased by 4% to about USD 1.28bn. The deficit in food and agricultural trade with the European Union grew further as a result. On the other hand, Polish exports to the markets of the former Soviet Union continued to grow. The share of exports to the former USSR in Poland's overall food and agricultural exports increased to 44%. After the first three quarters of 1997 Poland had a surplus in trade with this region which reached USD 911m (an increase of 29%).
