Polish regional policy in the context of policy pursued by the European Union

The characteristic feature of the European Union is the broad scope of intervention in the processes of regional development, both at the level of the European Commission and individual member-countries. This activity is carried out on the basis of decisions formulated in the treaties of Rome, Maastricht and Amsterdam, which envisage the achievement of greater internal cohesion of the whole organisation. This finds expression in, for example, the co-ordinating functions of the 16th General Directorate for Regional Policy and the share of resoruces allocated to regional development in the ELI budget, which is now close to 35%. The regional development policy is planned for long-term periods. The currently implemented plan covers the 1994-1999 period. The article presents the assumptions of the European Union's structural policy in 2000-2006.
