Gap junction connexins in female reproductive organs: implications for women's reproductive health

BACKGROUND: Connexins comprise a family of similar to 20 proteins that form intercellular membrane channels (gap junction channels) providing a direct route for metabolites and signalling molecules to pass between cells. This review provides a critical analysis of the evidence for essential roles of individual connexins in female reproductive function, highlighting implications for women's reproductive health.
