Prevent storage tank fires

Most storage tank fires are not on the same scale as the Bunce-field Oil Depot accident in Hertfordshire, UK, since they are common occurrences. Although each oil storage facility must be individually evaluated with regard to its overall safety, there are general principles that can be applied to reduce the risk of storage tank fires and mitigate the extent of damage if a fire does occur. In discussing these principles, it must be recognized that risk can be managed to achieve acceptable levels, but it cannot be totally eliminated.
