The traditional approach for collecting plant as-built data commonly used for the revamp and retrofit of existing facilities, as well as for plant maintenance and operation, includes manually collecting the data and reviewing existing plot plans, elevation drawings, systems isometrics, or other 2D CAD drawings. These items are prepared during the design and engineering phase. Since these options can be time-consuming and lack accuracy, complications often occur: 1. Only hard-copy drawings are available, and a new CAD model needs to be created 2. Defective documentation is provided to the owner 3. As-built condition does not match as-designed condition, as CAD files are not updated with plant modifications and maintenance work over time 4. Field-fixed items are not reflected in the design 5. Identification of clash is prone to human error and can be difficult.
