Good breeding: Kris Collins picks out some of the star attractions at this year's autumn trials in the Netherlands

Dutch bedding plant breeders traditionally open their glasshouse doors to customers in May and November, seeking to highlight their latest breeding advancements, colour forms and quality developments, while carrying out comparison trials to show how their product stands up to their competitors'. To allow their international customers to make the most of a visit to the Netherlands, the November trials are held at the same time as the international Horti Fair trade show. With good rail and road links,it is possible to visit the show - one of Europe's largest -and then get out to the different locations, primarily around Alsmeer and further north around West Friesland, to visit the various company trial sites.
