Daphne: With care, these diverse shrubs can provide life, colour and fragrance to gardens throughout the year, says Dave Holland

Daphne is a challenging yet rewarding group of small to medium-sized shrubs, two of which — D. mezereum and D. laureola — are British natives. Together with such shrubs as Hamamelis, Chimonanthus, Viburnum, Lonicera fragrantissima, Mahonia and others, they can be used to provide life, colour and, above all. fragrance to gardens and planting schemes early in the year. With care, forms can be selected to provide their fragrance and flowers throughout most of the year. Flower colour extends from purple and pink to white and even yellow.
