It has long been the view of the traditional nursery trade that landscape architects, designers and even many contractors simply do not know enough about the plants they are planning and planting. It is all too easy and convenient, it seems, to specify a tried-and-trusted plant and ignore the fact that there may be newer and better forms out there. Or that, in many cases, a plant is just not right for the situation. At an industry forum organised by HW last year, marketing director Doug Reade of Wyevale Nurseries, Herefordshire, said: "We encourage customers to come to the nursery to see the plants, and we go to sites to see what has or has not worked.
