Contrasting fortunes of festive favourites: Price pressures are hitting poinsettia growers hard, unlike their Christmas tree counterparts
Christmas trees and poinsettia are two mainstays of plant sales in December. But the markets for each plant have seen sharply contrasting experiences this year. Poinsettia growers in the UK have struggled for years against cheap imports. The fact thatsupermarkets are holding prices down while heating costs are rising is causing increasing problems. So, what can be done? The NFL) called last week for pot plants and flowers to be brought under the statutory Supermarket Code of Practice for buying produce in order to try to stop pot-plant growers going out of business because of tightening margins.
