Two houses, side by side in the middle of a city block in Portland, Oregon, each with its own singular style, provided the impetus and background for the two distinctly different gardens belonging to Michael Schultz and his partner, artist Will Goodman. Viewed together they offer a glimpse into the ever-evolving ethos of the designer. At four, Michael's passion for plants led him astray on the garden path: He was busted for filching marigold and nasturtium seeds from a local store. Confession provided absolution and didn't discourage this budding plantsman. A weekly 25-cent allowance afforded him the means to purchase plants and seeds to trial in the family garden.
