Fire and Smoke Damper Trade-Offs - At What Cost?

AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLERS SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY APPROPRIATE REDUNDANT SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS FIRE AND SMOKE DAMPERS TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF WE OCCUPANTS AND THEIR PROPERTY. There is concern among members of the fire service, design professionals, and code officials who believe we have gone too far with the trade-off concept in order to economically justify the use of automatic fire sprinklers. Although sprinklers have proven to be an effective fire protection tool, the performance reliability of sprinkler systems during actual fires is passionately debated in the fire protection engineering field and is far from being resolved. Therefore, how much reliance and confidence should be placed in automatic sprinkler systems is argued with startling disparate opinions.
