摘要

Depression is one of the most common types of mood disorders, characterized by a loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, depressed moods, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration. On a worldwide level, depression affects the lives of more than 340 million people. In the United States alone, the incidence of mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar depression, affects approximately 20.9 million adults or 9.5% of the US population 18 years and older. The occurrence of depression is not specific to any one age group, and estimates of prevalence of depression among children (6-12 years of age) and adolescents (13-17 years of age) range from 2% to 6%.
