Your eyes are drawn to those smiling daisy faces in shades of golden yellow, scarlet, peach, maroon, and pristine white. They are on display in every home garden center and perhaps your local supermarket. Gerbera daisies, named in honor of the Germannaturalist Traugott Gerber, and sometimes referred to as Transvaal daisy, the gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii) ranks as the fifth most important cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum and tulip) and for good reason. These beauties are long lasting, remain open in the dark, and as a bonus, are effective air cleaning house-plants. NASA research shows the gerbera to be superior in the removal of benzene, a well-known carcinogen.
