IN YOUR GREENHOUSE: STRAW-BALE GROWING

Iread about growing on straw bales in an old gardening book. The method was being used to get plants to grow faster in the depths of an English winter. Could it work in my greenhouse? I figured it would. But I wanted to modify the recommended additives, which seemed more like a list of industrial chemicals than garden fertilizers. I reasoned that the most important part of cultivating plants in straw bales would be to provide enough heat from the bales to keep the roots growing well. The work of theadditives, therefore, should be not just feeding the plants but also turning the bales essentially into rotting "compost heaps."
