Production potential and economic feasibility of rice (Oryza sativa L.) based cropping system under irrigated condition

Crop intensification both in time and space is the only option to augment crop production of 250-275 million tonnes to feed for nearly 1 billion population of the country in 2000 AD (Nandekar et al. 1992). Rice is prominent kharif season crop of Chhattisgarh grown under partially or fully irrigated condition. Rice-chickpea, rice-mustard, rice-wheat, rice-lathyrus and rice-rice cropping sequence is being adopted in the region but net profit per unit area per unit time is not very encouraging. Rice will remain as the farmers preference during rainy season due to topography and rainfall pattern. Thus economically potential crops are needed to be included in rice based system. Therefore, diversification of cropping system with rice have become important to improve the economic viability. Thus, an attempt was made to identify a profitable cropping sequence with medium duration rice varieties under assured water supply. The two years study (1995-97) was conducted on sandy loam soil at Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur. The soil was neutral in pH (6.7) having 231 kg ha~(-1) of available N, 22.9 kg ha~(-1) of available P and 343.4 kg ha~(-1) of exchangeable K. The treatment consisted of 6 rice based cropping sequences with single crop of rice "Mahamaya" during kharif season. The 6 crops-mustard (Pusa bold), wheat (Hl-1077), Chickpea (JG-74), tomato (Pusa ruby), cabbage (MCV-1) and spinach (All green) during winter and 4 crop-bottlegourd (G-2), clusterbean (Pusa Navbhar), onion (N-53) and fodder sorghum (M.P. Chari) during summer were laid out in randomized block design with three replications.
