Field experiments were carried out during the winter seasons of 1998-91 at Mohanpur (West Bengal) to compare pure stands of potatoes and groundnuts in rows 30 or 40 cm apart with 2:2 and 3:3 potato:groundnut intercrops with 30 or 40 cm row spacing.Yields of both crops were highest in pure stands, but potato-equivalent yields of the whole cropping system were higher in the intercrops. Land equivalent ratio and monetary returns were greatest in the 3:3 intercropping system with rows 40 cm apart.
