Use of neem products and biocontrol agents for the management of pomegranate fruitborer, Deudorix isocrates (Fabr.)

The pomegranate is attacked by a large number of pests, and the worst part is that fruits are most vulnerable to the attack than any other part of the tree. The most destructive enemy is anar butterfly or fruit borer, Deudorix isocrates which causessevere damage to pomegranate fruits ranging from 40 to 90 per cent in different parts of the country making them unfit for human consumption (Wadhi and Batra, 1969. Severe infestation of fruit borer has resulted in the reduction of pomegranate yield as well as cultivation of this popular fruit in the country. Once the larva enters into the fruit, the insecticidal application against this pest has often proved ineffective and uneconomical. The most effective means of controlling the pest should start from the period of butterfly activity or from the egg stage itself. Hence studies were conducted for the management of the pest with the use of neem products and biocontrol agents.
