I FIRST STARTED to worry about the economy two years ago during a conversation with George Soros, the legendary investor, at an event in Manhattan.Someone ventured that Wall Street had effectively mitigated risk with its sophisticated mathematical modeling. "I don't believe that," Soros said. " I don't understand any of it, and I don't think anyone else does either." The markets, he concluded, had become vulnerable to excessive risk.
