Costs of Spinning, Texturing, Weaving and Knitting Production in Nine Countries

In this report, the costs of producing yarns and fabrics are presented for nine countries—namely Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Turkey and the USA. In the case of ring spun yarn, total production costs—including the costs of raw materials and the costs of manufacturing—fell between 2010 and 2012 in six countries due, primarily, to declines in raw material costs. In 2012 the total production cost was highest in China and lowest in India. In the case of rotor spun yarn, total production costs also fell in six countries between 2010 and 2012. In 2012 the total production cost was highest in China and lowest in the USA. In the case of textured yarn, total production costs were up in five countries due to increases in raw material costs and manufacturing costs. In 2012 the total production cost was highest in Italy and lowest in India. In weaving, the total cost of producing fabric from ring spun yarn fell between 2010 and 2012 in five countries. In 2012 the total production cost was highest in Italy and lowest in Indonesia. The total cost of producing woven fabric from rotor spun yarn fell between 2010 and 2012 in seven countries—primarily as a result of declines in raw material costs. In 2012 the total production cost was, again, highest in Italy, and lowest in India and Indonesia. The total cost of producing woven fabric from textured yarn, meanwhile, fell between 2010 and 2012 in six countries. Unlike in other categories, however, the falls were due primarily to declines in manufacturing costs. In 2012 the total production cost was highest in Italy and lowest in Egypt.
