Providing Competitive Rotary Steerable Systems: While the first rotary steerable system was developed in the early 1990s by Cambridge Drilling Automation

While the first rotary steerable system was developed in the early 1990s by Cambridge Drilling Automation, it wasn't fully commercialized by some companies until the late 1990s. Today, in addition to several established rotary steerable system (RSS) providers, some companies are entering the business by developing their own tools. At the same time, those companies with RSS experience continue to develop newer, more capable systems for new applications or tools specifically aimed at low cost markets such as onshore drilling. Baker Hughes Inteq introduced the first commercial RSS in 1997 with its AutoTrak system, which has been used in more than 11 million ft (more than 3.3 million m) of hole worldwide. The following pages contain companies (in alphabetical order) that offer RSSs.
