Every garden poses challenges for the gardener, and no more so than that of a house built on a steep, narrow block of land. Jan and Max Moore-Wilton's house sits on a westerly facing hillside above Sydney's Middle Harbour. Not only steep and narrow, it has an extremely long street frontage. Plus, the soil is sandy, shallow and rocky -typical of Sydney foreshores. Naturally they needed privacy from the street and from houses that overlooked them. Each house in the street has a view, so trees were notan option. The garden is levelled into a series of terraces, with the main living area of the house on the second level above the street. A high wall just inside the front gate could be foreboding, but Jan has added a metal frame for interest and clothedthe wall in well tended Ficus pumila.
