Variable Frequency Drives have certainly come a long way in terms of reliability, efficiency, cost, and ease of use. The industry has largely standardised on the IGBT (Insulated Gate Bi-polar Transistor) based PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) design; leaving the engineer with the task of specifying what form or performance level of filtration (harmonic, EMC, and possibly motor) they wish to implement.
