The most successful antifouling coating system pre-2003 was the tributyltin self-polishing copolymer systems. In 2001 the IMO Convention on the control of harmful antifouling systems on ships prohibited the application of new TBT-containing antifouling coatings from 2003 and that TBT-containign coatings should be prohibited on ship hulls form 2008. One of the most succesful self-polishing antifouling systems today are based on linear silyl ester copolymers.
