Aqueous resin composition, aqueous coating composition and coating method for plastic molded articles

For cost and recycling reasons, polypropylene, polycarbonate and ABS plastics are being increasingly used, particularly for automotive interior parts. However, it has been difficult to achieve the desired level of adhesion, water resistance, stain (oil) resistance from a coating on these substrates, especially from a waterborne coating. A number of options are mentioned in the patent literature including blending chlorinated polyolefin emulsions with acrylic emulsions, the use of surfactants and the use of metal ion-based resins with urethane dispersions, but none are considered to have the right mix of properties.
