Survey of kinnow mandarin orchards for nutrients status in arid irrigated region of Punjab

A survey of kinnow orchards of arid-irrigated region of Punjab was conducted. On the basis of survey the orchards were classified into three categories viz. high yielding, medium yielding and low yielding orchards. All the three categories of orchardshad alkaline soil. Though the region is having the problem of soil and water salinity, however, in all the orchards surveyed the salinity was less than 0.5 ds nr1. The high yielding orchards had good status of available nutrients in soil and leaves as compared to low yielding orchards. The average nutrient content in the leaves of high yielding orchards was N (2.76%), P (0.17%), K (1.67%), Fe (79.33ppm), Zn (3lppm), Mn (38.33ppm), and Cu (8.33ppm). The low yielding orchards were deficient in N, Fe andZn. Zn and Fe deficiencies were even noticed in the high yielding orchards, however, the severity of the deficiency was lesser than the low and medium yielding orchards. Higher number of fruits per tree and higher fruit weight was recorded in the high yielding orchards as compared to low and medium yielding orchards. The' variation in the quality attributes viz TSS and acidity among the different categories of the orchards was less.
