Novatek's Export Moves

In a move that could further erode Gazprom's Russian gas export monopoly, independent gas producer Novatek is setting up a trading arm in Geneva that may well also handle initial marketing efforts for the planned Yamal LNG project (WGI Jul.7,p2). In what would be an even more revolutionary move, Novatek is seriously considering alternatives to oil-indexed pricing in its contracts — even as Gazprom continues to insist that oil indexation is necessary for stability of supply (WGI Jan.19,p3).
