LNG sellers' decades-old strategy of "dropping" gas on the doorstep of new importing countries no longer works very well — if at all. With demand likely having peaked in giant importers Japan and South Korea, and growth stumbling in China and India, producers are having to look to new markets for sales. And while new customers are emerging, they are signing up for smaller volumes on shorter terms. With competitive pricing and delivery flexibility no longer enough to win big contracts in the current buyer's market, sellers are having to consider investing further downstream to help create demand, establishing integrated structures for LNG operations similar to those for oil.
