Orchard production beyond 2000: here are future trends and ideas on how to be successful in the years to come

As we move into the 21st century one thing is certain -- orchard production systems will be diverse and continue to evolve. This is largely because what's right for one orchardist's marketing and growing climate may not be right for another's -- whether they grow fruit across town or on the opposite coast! As profit margins remain slim and even decline, only savvy growers who can identify what systems are working and are profitable will survive. We feel a good dose of experience and common sense, amild tolerance for risk, and access to research-based information should mold a grower's current and future production system. That being said, we interviewed some successful growers, production managers, and advisors from across the U.S. to see where their current production systems stand, and how they foresee planting orchards in the near future.
