Back in 1898,and then in 1932 and 1947,large floods occurred in the Oxfordshire town.Most recently,families in 125 residential properties will forlornly remember the Easter Holidays of 1998 as the time they were hit by severe floods;an incident which also affected 35 commercial premises."The main cause of flooding at Banbury is when heavy rain falls on the river Cherwell's catchment,' commented Richard Harding,Environment Agency project manager.'In the 24-hour period over the 8-9 April 1998,67mm of rain fell on ground in the upper catchment of the river that was already saturated.The average monthly rainfall for the upper Cherwell Valley for the whole of April is usually just 47mm.Since then,we have been working very closely with Black & Veatch on design proposals and an ongoing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to help shape a flood alleviation project.
