This week sees the launch of a desktop calculator designed exclusively for pig units. Working from bread-and-butter facts it instantly extrapolates the key information producers need to benchmark their units and to correct areas of under-performance.And because it is both simple and free, it may encourage the industry to start recording again, says its creator, Colin Wooldridge, who reckons only a quarter of the national herd is being recorded properly at present. 'Fifty percent of the farms I go ondon't know their daily liveweight gain,'he said. 'But they know their average deadweight, their mortality rate, the weight their pigs come into the system at, and how many pigs a year they sell - and with this information the calculator can tell them their daily liveweight gain.
