Fritz and Elke Hussmann's Danish herd is showing how British genetics can hold their own in Europe. The Hussmann's moved to Denmark from Germany in 1996. After graduating, Fritz began to look for a place to start a pig business. He was impressed withoutdoor production and during his studies gained experience of the Freiland system, where sows are free-range. His search for the right site led him to Southern Denmark. The capital required to start the enterprise was favourable and there were good business opportunities and some attractive support packages available for new entrants.
