The British mushroom industry is in crisis due to the fact that its costs are outstripping its income. In the past 5 years, capacity has almost halved, and a significant number of growers have gone out of business. The large retailers, with their control of the market, are generally held responsible for forcing down the 'real' price over recent years. The purchasing skills of the big supermarket groups, the growth of the industry in other European countries, improvements in transportation, distribution and post-harvest quality, together with a general oversupply in the market place, have left British growers vulnerable.
