This month harks back only to May 1996. The photograph was in an article discussing the quality implications of dirty mushrooms. The 0-6 scale was devised by Ralph Noble of HRI to measure cleanliness in his casing work. We rarely see dirty mushrooms now due to the use of heavy peats and vastly improved pinning control, deep pinning is almost a thing of the past. But when it does occur one is reminded that dirty mushrooms lower 'visual' quality more than almost anything else.
