Providing much more space, at a very reasonable price, the good-looking new Golf Estate offers an affordable alternative to the hatchback. WE NEVER REALLY expected an estate version of the Mk 5 Golf. Previous models hadn't been particularly inspiring and sales had only been modest, so there didn't seem much incentive for Volkswagen to engineer a successor. It seemed to be a victim of changing times. Where once the estate car was the only option to the hatchback, apart from a booted saloon, the advent of MPVs like the Sharan had transformed the market for family transporters and load luggers. And, with the addition of other variations on the Mk 5 Golf platform, like the Touran and Golf Plus, which both offered better accommodation for passengers and luggage, there didn't seem much need for yet another Golf with more loadspace than the hatchback.
