Volkswagen took a long time to produce an Estate version of the Golf, and then it became overshadowed by the more fashionable mini-MPVs. FOR MORE than two generations, Volkswagen offered Golf buyers a simple choice between hatchback and saloon (i.e. Jetta/Vento/Bora). If you wanted a full-bodied estate car, you had to move up a class to the Passat, but there was clearly a gap in the range for an estate version of the Golf. Nowadays, customers are spoilt for choice with not simply the Hatchback or Estate, but also the Golf Plus and Touran. But, while the mini-MPVs might offer greater flexibility, the traditional estate continues to appeal to buyers who want to be able to transport bulky loads without needing to remove seats from the vehicle, and who want to feel that they are driving a car, not a bus.
