I'M NOT DAFT enough to think that I've played any part at all in the potential launch of a new VW coupe. But I have, in previous columns, pointed out the ongoing high level of demand for a 'new' Scirocco or Corrado which exists among Volkswagen enthusiasts. This is borne out by persistently high Corrado values, with ￡8,000 still being the benchmark figure for an immaculate, low mileage VR6 Storm. Well, it looks as if Volkswagen has finally given the green light for such a new model, a fact which has been graphically illustrated by the public launch of the Iroc 'concept car' which we featured in the last issue. Whether the new coupe will be called Scirocco remains to be seen, but the Iroc moniker just happens to have been lifted from the middle of the word Scirocco, and the concept car's embossed grey number plates read 'Scirocco', with the Iroc lettering picked out in black. It seems that the return of the Scirocco is imminent, with production likely to start in 2008.
