FOR MANY years, most manufacturers considered the Brazilian population to be too poor to offer much of a market for their cars. Only the privileged few could afford the luxury of limousines and only a few expensive American autos were available. Volkswagen set out to change all that, and started exporting Beetles to South America in 1950. Relatively inexpensive, with its reliable low-revving air-cooled engine, big wheels and rugged suspension to cope with the rough roads, and much more practical than the American cars available up until then, the Volkswagen Beetle proved ideal for Brazil.
