Pre-dating the Polo R WRC by almost two decades, the Wintershall VW Polo Cup cars of the mid-1980s provided the Polo's first official forays into motorsport. Richard Gooding examines a well preserved survivor and finds out what made the later G40-powered racers special... THE ALL-conquering Polo R WRC may be the current weapon of choice of the Volkswagen Motorsport team, based in Hannover, but it's far from the first version of the German small car that has taken to motorsport and it's not the only one, even today.
