THINK GOLF, Volkswagen's best-selling model, and you invariably conjure up pictures of the most famous Golf of all, the GTI - the archetypal hot hatch. But the vast majority of the 23 million Golfs sold provided much more mundane standard four-door family transport for the masses - like its Beetle forebear, it is a true People's car. Now Volkswagen has taken the Golf concept one step further and increased both its size and its versatility, Reacting to the lead taken by rivals such as Renault, Peugeot and Ford with their Megane Scenic, 307 and Focus C-Max mini-MPVs, Volkswagen has introduced the Golf Plus. Essentially, it is a four-door Golf hatchback with a 95 mm higher roof line, greater rear legroom and a rear seat which can be moved backwards and forwards to provide a flexible load space, It looks substantially different, though, with revised front bodywork and a more stylish grille and headlamps, small quarter lights ahead of the front doors, and a restyled rear end, with a redefined rear window shape, LED rear lights and a number plate mounted on the tailgate rather than in the bumper.
