IT ALL STARTED OUT innocently enough, in 2003, when I went to the local VW dealership, Listers of Worcester, to look for a new car. At that time I was driving a 5-door Mk 4 Golf 1.6 SE, a car which didn't exactly set the world alight. I'd owned a Mk 2 GTI 16V a few years earlier, so I decided it was time to try a GTI again. I took test drives in a couple of Mk 4s, both the 150 and 180 PS models, to get an idea of the performance and handling, but they didn't have exactly what I was looking for, so I gave Listers full details of the specification I was after and left it with them.
