Believed to be the oldest surviving Mk 1 GTI, Rajan Paymaster's Mars red 76 represents an important piece of history. THIRTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Rajan Paymaster from Bedfordshire may be a Project Manager for General Motors at Millbrook, running a Vectra VXR as his company car, but in his own time he's a self-confessed Mk 1 Golf maniac and currently owns no less than 10 examples. His driving career started off innocently enough, though - like so many students -in 1989, with a Miami blue 1975 1200 Beetle, but it soon gave way to a Mk 1 Golf GX and was followed by a Mk 2 Golf Driver, a Mk 2 GTI 16V and a Mk 1 GTI Campaign, before graduating to a Mk 3 Colour Concept GTI in Jazz blue. But the serious Mk 1 obsession first began in late 2003, when he travelled to Swansea to buy a black 79 Mk 1 GTI which he'd seen advertised on the internet, and after undertaking a semi-restoration on it he hasn't looked back since, having developed a particular affinity for the earlier models.
