THE STARTING POINT of this decade-long evaluation of my New Beetle Cabrio TDI occurs much longer back in time. As an almost-teenager in 1966 I can remember sitting in a new Karmann Ghia and Split-Screen Type 2 Microbus in the showroom of Kays of Derby while my father concluded his purchase of a new 1300 Beetle. The longing for a Karmann Ghia remained with me ever since and, deeper still, the desire for a Beetle Cabriolet instilled by seeing a new one - a rare sight in the UK - at that dealership a few weeks later.
