Distemper in a Labrador Retriever

A 15-month-old intact male Labrador retriever presented with acute onset of neurologic signs. The dog had been obtained from the previous owner approximately 5 months earlier and had an unknown vaccination history. He was not on any medications. One week before presentation, after a weekend camping trip with the current owners, the dog became unable to open his mouth and began drooling. An oral examination performed by the referring veterinarian revealed no significant abnormalities. Signs progressedto inability to drink, behavior change consisting of increased aggression toward the family cat, and myoclonus of the jaw. The dog was referred to the Auburn University Small Animal Teaching Hospital (AUSATH) for further evaluation and potential treatment.
