Experience with FGD following the Wellman-Lord process

BKB are operating two power plants for the power generation with lignite from the Helmstedter area. For both units, a flue gas scrubbing has been provided on the basis of regeneratively operating Wellman-Lord process and taken into operation in 1987. The process choice was mainly determined by the high sulphur contents of fuels. The process technology of the Wellman-Lord process has never caused any problems since start of operation. Only the uncertainties upon the design of the auxiliary plants has resulted in considerable availability restrictions during the first years of operation. Since remedying these bottlenecks and some problems with individual components the plant has been operating smoothly. It is safely to be operated, and the operating costs enable an economic power generation. This process can be recommended for use under similar basic conditions.
