摘要

Readers need to be made aware of the controversy surrounding this peculiar lesion in cats. The authors have concluded the lesions presented in the paper are sclerosing mast cell tumours, but have not presented conclusive evidence to support their claim. While the opinion of the authors is acknowledged as feasible, it is only that, opinion. To confound the issue, there is a form of gastrointestinal mast cell neoplasia in cats that induces a sclerosing reaction (Figs 1–3). However, such mast cell tumours have typical histologic features of neoplasia characterized by sheets of uniform population of neoplastic cells which, in conjunction with the sclerosis, create the mass effect. The authors may also have confounded their results with cases of T-cell lymphoma with hypereosinophilic syndrome which is recognized in cats1 and dogs.2Fig. 3B of the paper appears to depict such a case. The authors argument hinges on the finding of Giesma- and CD117-positive mast cells. The photomicrographic images provided in the paper demonstrate mast cells sprinkled within the lesion. These findings are more typical of feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia3 and not conclusive of mast cell neoplasia. It is also conceivable some of the cases could be septic abscesses with prominent eosinophil infiltration reported by Ozaki.4 Gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia and abscess-forming inflammatory granulation tissue with eosinophil infiltration may be one in the same disorder since intralesional bacteria are a feature of both. While the authors did not report on the presence or absence of bacteria in their series, it is difficult to imagine the lack of bacteria considering the extensive ulceration described.
