RUMENO-SPLENITIS IN A THIRTY-MONTH OLD HEIFER: A CASE REPORT

This paper reports on the case of rumeno-splenitis in a thirty month old White Fulani heifer which was brought from Zaria to Akure with 10 others (about 2 months before this report). The routine antistress and restorative treatment given to the 11 heads of cattle following their distant journey by road, 750 kilometres from the North to South-west in Nigeria was effective for all but one heifer which was later isolated for a more detailed clinical observation. It died 46 hours after the commencement of treatment. Postmortem examination revealed hardware disease which was not the conventional reticulo-pericarditis reported by earlier workers/investigators because of the peculiar extensive splenic involvement; which was traced to adhesion of the rumenand diaphragm as a result of the penetration of a metal. The authors suggest a descriptive term "rumeno-splenitis" for the condition.
