Synaesthesia and cortical connections: cause or correlation?

Synaesthesia seems to involve atypical binding , in which certain stimuli evoke an additional percept between or within modalities. Bargary and Mitchell presented an interesting and comprehensive review of the anatomical origins of synaesthesia, which considered possible molecular mechanisms for structural differences between synaes-thetic and non-synaesthetic brains. After reviewing different models of synaesthesia and focusing mainly on evidence supporting structural differences between synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes, Bargary and Mitchell concluded that these structural differences are the 'primary cause of developmental synaesthesia' (Ref. p. 340).
