Road worker safety stepped up

Crossing of live carriageways on foot is being discouraged by the Highways Agency. Traffic management and road maintenance contractors have been urged by the Highways Agency to do all they can to eliminate the need for operatives to cross live carriageway on foot. Chief executive Graham Dalton has written to all companies that carry out work on the strategic network to say that the practice will be strongly discouraged from 1 January 2015. One area of work where the new expectation for added safety will be most keenly felt is in the placing and removal of traffic cones. From now on cone laying activities on Highways Agency routes will require the use of not one, but two vehicles.
